The philosophy of Community Lab School recognizes that time must be the variable if learning is to be a constant. Students are encouraged to view learning as a continuum. Traditional grading practices fail to describe a student's academic, social/emotional, and skill development in any meaningful way. Community Lab School works with students to establish measures of competency and report growth and mastery on a comprehensive set of standards.

Community Lab School is designed to provide students with more control over their education than traditional comprehensive school's permit. Established in 1972, Piedmont Virginia Community College is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. PVCC is one of 23 community colleges in Virginia that comprise the Virginia Community College System. Educating individuals from K12 to adults, PVCC is the community's college.
